Vikram Solar Commissions 6 GW Module Mega-Facility

On 6 July 2026, Vikram Solar Ltd commissioned its greenfield plant in Gangaikondan, Tamil Nadu, and rolled out the first solar module from the facility. Management had disclosed on the May 2026 earnings call that the new plant adds 6 GW of module capacity, raising total module manufacturing from 9.5 GW to 15.5 GW .

What Vikram Solar Does

Vikram Solar is a major Indian solar photovoltaic (PV) module maker, also selling battery-storage systems (VION brand) and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services. Clients include NTPC, government agencies, and commercial & industrial firms. Headquartered in Kolkata, it exports to 39 countries.

A 6 GW Leap with Advanced TOPCon Technology

The first modules from Gangaikondan are Hypersol N-Type TOPCon G12R panels (615–640 watts, efficiency up to 23.69%). TOPCon (tunnel oxide passivated contact) is a high-efficiency cell design that boosts power output per panel. The facility is highly automated with real-time monitoring and defect inspection . The plant is part of a three-stage integration plan that will eventually include cell, wafer and ingot production on site .

Strong Order Book Justifies the Expansion

The new capacity arrives when the company's order book is already deep. As of 31 March 2026, Vikram Solar reported an order book of 8.2 GW, providing revenue visibility for the coming fiscal year . That book is anchored by independent power producers (69%), with the remainder split between commercial & industrial (13%) and government/EPC customers (18%) .

For FY27, management guided total module production of roughly 8 GW, of which 2 GW will serve the Domestic Content Requirement (DCR) segment – projects that must use Indian-made cells – and 6 GW for non-DCR . Against the expanded 15.5 GW nameplate capacity, that implies a utilization rate of 65%‑70% for modules and 70%‑75% for cells .

Vertical Integration and Policy Alignment

Gangaikondan is the first step toward an ingot-to-module campus. Plans include 9 GW of solar cell capacity by FY27, another 3 GW by FY28, and 12 GW of wafer/ingot capacity by FY29-30 . First cell output is expected by end-2026/early-2027 .

CEO Sameer Nagpal noted on the May 2026 call:

> “ALMM (Approved List of Models and Manufacturers – only listed modules can be used in government/utility projects) and BCD (basic customs duty, which makes imported cells/modules costlier) continue to provide the necessary guardrails for domestic growth. The cell-level mandate effective June 2026 is a critical milestone.”

Chairman Gyanesh Chaudhary added:

> “India today imports nearly all of its wafer and ingot from China… Vikram Solar will capture that value chain upstream.”

Q2 FY261,109.9128.5
Q3 FY261,106.098.1

For full-year FY26, revenue was ₹4,802.3 crore, net profit ₹470.4 crore, and EPS ₹13.68 .

Stock Price Before the News

In the month before the announcement (3 June to 3 July 2026), Vikram Solar’s share price fell from ₹205.40 to ₹189.00 (‑7.99%), while the Nifty 50 rose +3.70% and peer electrical-equipment stocks gained +3.69% on average . Trading volume declined ‑4.08% versus a peer average surge .

What to Watch Next

  • Module ramp-up: Achieving 65–70% utilization in FY27 is key to the 8 GW production target .
  • Cell plant timeline: On-time first output by early 2027 would reduce external cell dependency and unlock DCR orders .
  • Regulatory environment: ALMM, BCD, and the wafer-ingot mandate are central to domestic manufacturing economics .
